Most advisors believe theyโre leading the relationship. But the client already decided if youโre in the driverโs seat or just riding along.
Thereโs a perception gap that kills trust, especially with high net worth clients. Advisors often lead with the same energy they used on their climb:
โGrow the assets. Push the performance. Own their outcome.โ
They show up with technical aptitude, trying to prove they should be the one to drive client outcomes. But many clients arenโt asking for that, especially the ones whoโve already made it.

Iโve seen thousands of deals. The biggest disconnect?
Advisors show up like the client needs a driver, when the client already has their hands on the wheel.
Youโre either the ๐๐ซ๐ข๐ฏ๐๐ซ – brought in to lead the outcome.
Or the ๐๐ฎ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐๐ซ – invited to integrate into a structure they already trust.
Misread that role, and you trigger the wrong instinct. Thatโs why you donโt get the second meeting. Not because you werenโt sharp but because you misunderstood the role they wanted from you.
And the higher the net worth, the more nuanced this psychology is.
These clients donโt need momentum. They need control and simplicity.
The skill wasnโt in the plan, It was in how you showed up to deliver it.
Early in my career, I showed up ready to lead. I brought the plan but I was still pushing my process. I thought I was providing value. But sometimes, I just proved I didnโt understand what they actually needed. Once I understood the role I needed to play, everything changed.

Before you can show up the right way, you have to understand:
Itโs their psychology, their world, and their view that defines your role.
Some clients hand over control. They want a driver.
Think: Inheritors. Liquidity events. Retirees.
They want someone to take the wheel, provide direction and protect whatโs next.
Others wonโt give up control. They want a supporter.
Think: Entrepreneurs. Business owners. Real estate investors.
They want their capital productive without interference.
As a leader, I built high-performing teams around this exact mindset.
We didnโt lead by default. We calibrated based on the client, their psychology, and the moment. It wasnโt about being the smartest advisor in the room.
It was about knowing the role they needed and delivering what the moment called for.
Not every client wants a driver. But they all expect you to know the difference.
