Lesson to My Younger Leader Self: Go Wide

If I could sit down with my younger leader self, the one still thinking like a top producer, Iโ€™d say this:

Stop thinking like an individual producer. Start thinking like an operator.

Itโ€™s not about doing more yourself, itโ€™s about building the systems, teams, and culture that make success repeatable.

Most people who get promoted into leadership in this business arenโ€™t tapped because they went through a formal leader training program right out of college.

They get promoted because they performed.

That was me.

I was promoted because of results, not because I was trained to be a leader.

Thatโ€™s where the challenge starts. The instinct is to lead by replicating what you did personally.

But leadership isnโ€™t about building from your own playbook, itโ€™s about running the business.

Youโ€™re still responsible for revenue, but now youโ€™re also accountable for risk, compliance, process, client experience and of course, people.

Youโ€™re not just advising clients, youโ€™re managing the entire system that supports them.

And youโ€™re leading people from all backgrounds, with different skill sets, goals, and personal challenges. And not everyone thinks like you.

Leadership isnโ€™t about being the smartest person in the room.

Itโ€™s about understanding the room and knowing how each decision affects the people, the process, and the outcome.

Most leaders stay too close to what made them successful as

They try to lead with product knowledge, personal tactics, and last yearโ€™s playbook.

That may work for a while, but eventually the cracks show.

Culture stalls.
Process breaks.
Clients get smarter but your system doesnโ€™t evolve.

And the team stops growing, because theyโ€™re only being managed, not developed.

You can still hit to hit your numbers that way, but thatโ€™s not real leadership.

Thatโ€™s you just managing production on autopilot.

If I could go back, Iโ€™d compress the learning curve.

Thatโ€™s the difference between staying in the game and leading it.
